Can this probe be connected directly to a PLC or DCS analog input module?

Generally, no. This is an eddy current transducer that requires a dedicated proximitor (e.g., a 3300 XL 5mm/8mm Proximitor Module) to provide power and condition the probe’s signal into a standard voltage output readable by control systems.

What are the requirements for the target surface during probe installation?

It is critical. The target surface must be a conductive metal with an area larger than the probe’s sensing face. 4140 steel is the optimal material. For non-recommended materials (e.g., aluminum, stainless steel), field calibration is mandatory to correct for sensitivity variance.

What is the purpose of the armor on the probe cable?

The stainless steel armor provides mechanical protection against cutting, abrasion, and crushing. It also offers some degree of electromagnetic shielding, enhancing signal integrity in noisy industrial environments.

What happens if the installed cable length differs from the standard length?

Cable length is part of the system’s calibration. Using a cable longer or shorter than originally specified will alter the system’s electrical characteristics, causing measurement inaccuracies and sensitivity drift. The entire measurement system must be re-calibrated.

How can I determine if a probe in service is performing correctly?

Performance testing is required. This typically involves checking the output gap voltage is within the expected range and performing a “Lift Test” to observe if the output voltage changes smoothly and linearly without any jumps or noise.

Can this probe be used to measure vibration on an aluminum rotor?

It can measure, but “Field Calibration” is essential. The material properties of aluminum differ from the calibration steel, causing changes in sensitivity and linear range. Readings taken without calibration will be incorrect.

Will the measurement accuracy be affected if the probe tip is covered by a small amount of oil?

Typically, there is negligible effect. Eddy current probes are sensitive to gap changes in conductive media. Non-conductive contaminants like oil, dust, or moisture have a minimal effect on the measurement, which is an advantage over other technologies.

What should be considered when using this probe in high-pressure or vacuum environments?

Media compatibility of the probe is key. The standard PVC cable jacket may not be suitable for certain oils, chemicals, or extreme pressures. For such cases, a probe with a special sheath (e.g., Polyimide) should be selected, and the pressure rating of the probe body and cable seals must be verified.
