Can this probe directly measure shafts or targets made of any material?

No. The probe is calibrated for specific electromagnetic properties of materials (typically AISI 4140 steel). Measuring other materials (e.g., aluminum, stainless steel) will result in inaccurate readings and requires the system to be recalibrated.

Can I cut or extend the probe cable if my installation space is limited?

Absolutely not. The cable length is an integral part of the system’s electrical characteristics. Modifying the cable length will alter the system’s calibration and performance, leading to measurement errors. Select a model with the desired cable length for your application.

How critical is the installation of the probe to its performance?

It is extremely critical. Improper installation (e.g., incorrect gap, misalignment, looseness) is the most common cause of failure. The probe must be securely mounted in its bracket and precisely aligned with the target area, with the initial gap set within the recommended range.

Can this probe be used for measuring Keyphasor signals?

Yes. This probe is part of the 3300 XL system and is commonly used as a Keyphasor probe to provide a speed reference and phase signal by detecting a keyway or notch on the shaft.

What is the impact if the probe tip is scratched or damaged?

Even minor damage can significantly affect measurement accuracy. The probe tip contains a precision sensing coil; any physical damage can alter its electromagnetic field, causing changes in its output characteristics. A damaged probe should be replaced immediately.

What should be considered when using it in high-temperature environments?

Ensure the ambient temperature is within the probe’s rated range (-35°C to 120°C). For higher temperature applications, high-temperature cables or heat shields should be considered to protect the probe. Also, thermal expansion of the target must be accounted for in gap measurements.

Is this probe compatible with non-Bently Nevada vibration monitoring systems?

In theory, it can work if the subsequent system’s input impedance and signal requirements match (e.g., -24Vdc power, negative voltage output). However, for guaranteed optimal accuracy and reliability, it is highly recommended to use it with a Bently Nevada 3300 XL or compatible system.

What can this probe measure besides vibration?

Proximity probe systems are primarily used to measure relative shaft vibration, displacement, and position. However, they are also commonly used to measure shaft radial position (eccentricity), axial thrust position (when mounted correctly), and rotational speed (Keyphasor function).
