Can this probe directly measure shafts made of aluminum or copper?

No. The standard calibration is for 4140 steel or similar. Measuring other materials requires re-calibrating the system, as different material properties will cause a significant change in the output signal.

The probe’s cable is damaged. Can it be field-repaired or can just the cable be replaced?

Generally, no. The probe and its cable are a single, sealed unit designed to maintain environmental integrity. Cable damage typically necessitates replacement of the entire probe assembly.

What is the recommended gap (air gap) between the probe tip and the target surface during installation?

For a typical calibration on a 4140 steel target, the optimal linear midpoint is usually set at approximately 1.0 mm (40 mils). The final gap should be set within the probe’s linear range and must be referenced against the calibration curve of the associated probe driver (proximitor).

Is this probe compatible with other brands of proximitors or monitoring systems?

It is not recommended. Bently Nevada probes are calibrated with their matched proximitors. Mixing brands can lead to measurement inaccuracies as sensitivity, output range, and calibration curves may not align.

For high-temperature applications (near 120°C), what special considerations are needed?

High-temperature coaxial extension cables must be used, as standard cables cannot withstand such temperatures. Furthermore, it must be ensured that the probe body temperature does not exceed its rating, which may require the use of a cooling kit or heat shielding.

Why does the probe require a negative power supply (-24 Vdc)?

This is standard for industrial eddy current sensor design. The negative supply helps reduce electrical noise interference, improves signal stability, and is compatible with the input circuitry of most monitoring systems.

How can I tell if the probe is functioning correctly in the field?

The most reliable method is to check the output gain and linearity of the entire system (probe, extension cable, proximitor) using a calibrator. Simply measuring probe resistance (typically 7-9 ohms) checks for continuity but does not confirm performance.

Is the probe tip allowed to touch the rotating shaft?

Absolutely not. The probe is designed for non-contact measurement. Any contact will immediately damage the expensive probe tip and could potentially cause damage to the machine shaft.
