ABB strengthens its power grid automation business through the acquisition of Netcontrol.

This acquisition will enhance ABB’s portfolio of grid automation solutions for power companies, addressing the growing demand for grid digitalization. The expanded portfolio will include advanced automation solutions for grid management, supporting power companies and critical infrastructure operators worldwide.

The combination of Netcontrol’s strong grid automation product line with ABB’s existing electrification business and global network will create significant growth opportunities, particularly in the European, Asian, and Middle Eastern markets.

Transaction Overview

ABB today announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Netcontrol, a leading supplier of grid automation solutions for power companies and critical infrastructure operators. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Netcontrol is headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, and employs approximately 100 people. Founded in 1991, the company is currently owned by the Swedish private equity firm Procuritas Partners.

Addressing the Challenges of Grid Modernization

With accelerating electrification and the global energy transition, power grids are facing increasing pressure from:

  • Growing electricity demand

  • Rising integration of renewable energy sources

  • Extreme and unpredictable weather events

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), electricity is expected to account for 50% of global energy consumption by 2050, underscoring the urgent need for smarter, more digital, and more resilient power grids.

By combining ABB’s electrification portfolio with Netcontrol’s advanced grid automation solutions, customers will be better equipped to accelerate the digital transformation of their power networks, improving reliability, flexibility, and resilience.

Executive Perspectives

“The power grid is increasingly becoming a bottleneck in the energy transition,” said Adrian Guggisberg, President of ABB Distribution Solutions.

**“The expansion and upgrading of power networks are crucial for enhancing energy resilience and ensuring an adequate power supply for the world’s growing population and industries. With the integration of renewable energy and new loads such as electric vehicles and heat pumps, the challenge of achieving reliable interconnection is increasing. Power companies must ensure grid stability, resilience, and flexibility through digitalization and automation.

The acquisition of Netcontrol aligns perfectly with our strategy to expand our grid automation portfolio and represents an important step in helping our customers accelerate their progress.”**

Upon completion of the transaction, Netcontrol’s products and services are expected to be integrated into ABB Distribution Solutions and promoted through ABB’s global sales network.

Looking Ahead
